PREGANCY – IMPORTANT INFO

Congratulations firstly if you are pregnant.

Anyone pregnant is advised to avoid close contact with livestock animals.

In order to protect their own health and that of their unborn child, women who are, or who may be, pregnant should be advised to avoid close contact with livestock animals.

This is because infectious organisms may be present in birth fluids of animals, particularly sheep, cattle and goats. Such organisms may result in infections such as chlamydiosis, listeriosis, Q fever and toxoplasmosis.

Different animal species are involved which give birth at different times of the year, meaning that the risks are not only confined to the spring when the majority of lambs are born.

Although these infections are uncommon, and the number of human pregnancies affected by contact with sheep is extremely small, it is important that pregnant women are made aware of the potential risks in order to safeguard their health and that of their unborn baby.

More information can be found here: https://bit.ly/4bRvDoG

Farm Park rides are not recommended for pregnant women or people with back, joint injuries or heart conditions.

  • Always wash your hands after animal contact
  • You can get zoonotic diseases (zoonoses – the term used for infections that can pass between animals and humans) from direct contact with animals: touching/bites, contaminated food/water and contaminated objects such as gates/bedding etc. Most common zoonotic diseases include: Coli, Cryptosporidiosis, Salmonella, Ringworm

Prevention:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching animals, fences or other surfaces in animal areas and before eating or drinking (gels and wipes do not remove dirt/diseases)
  • Do not put hands on faces or fingers in mouths while petting animals and whilst on the farm
  • Do not kiss farm animals or allow children to put their faces close to animals
  • Do not eat or drink while touching animals
  • Do not eat anything that has fallen on the floor

If you believe you have any symptoms of a zoonotic disease, book an appointment with your GP as soon as possible
